Troop 1214

Camp Conewago & Gettysburg National Historic Battlefield Camping Trip – 20-22 October 2023

This month the Troop headed north again, this time into New Birth of Freedom Council, to camp. We stayed at a BSA camp from 1919, Camp Conewago, and used that as a homebase to tour Gettysburg, Pennsylvania as part of the Gettysburg Historic Trails program. We visited the Gettysburg National Military Park before having lunch and hiking through historic downtown Gettysburg. We then drove over to the Eisenhower National Historic Site where we were able to tour the grounds and see the sites before taking a tour inside the house.  We were able to see the farm equipment, the old Secret Service office under the barn, and tour the house, learning the history behind the only home the Eisenhowers ever owned during their decades-long marriage!

On Saturday night after a hearty meal, our SPL invited another Troop, Troop 192 from Ohio, to our campfire where ghost stories were told, bad Dad jokes were shared, and a few skits were performed. It was a great end to the night and after all the cool fresh air, most Scouts had no issues going to sleep – most! Before we left on Sunday morning we helped the camp by stacking all the wood that they split on Saturday. Least we could do for the great hospitality!
